The genus Archachatina is the most primitive genus of the family Achatinidae. Compared to the Lissachatinas, they are characterized by a rounded apex and a "V"-shaped skin at the end of the leg. This genus includes smaller (e.g. Arch. porphyrostoma, Arch. knorri) and larger species (e.g. Arch. marginata marginata, Arch. marginata ovum "XXL"). Care and reproduction of species from this genus is, with some exceptions, easy. (E.g. Arch. papyracea adelinae, Arch. camerunensis are more difficult to care for and to reproduce. Problems with reproduction can also occur with Arch. marginata grevillei). They reproduce from the age of 12-18 months. Compared to Achatina's and Lissachatina's eggs, the eggs are large, with 5-12 eggs in the clutch depending on the species, exception is Arch. knorri which lays a maximum of 3 eggs. They incubate for 4 weeks. Archachatinas live for about 5-8 years.
