Thanks to the higher rim, this bowl can be used as a pool for snails. A water basin is not strictly necessary for snails, but many species will welcome the water basin. The wider base makes the bowl harder for snails to undermine. For larger species, it is better to place the bowl at the bottom of the enclosure and line the substrate up with the edge of the bowl. 

CAUTION - snails can drown in the water tank! The smaller the snail, the lower the water level is safe for it. Do not give very small species a pool at all (Subulina, Rumina). The water level should be no higher than the snail's breathing hole in the pool.
